Findlay 61, Reynoldsburg 14
Settlemire leads Trojans to rout of Raiders
The Findlay High School football team wasted no time jumping out to a big lead Aug. 31 at Reynoldsburg.
Vance Settlemire settled under Reynoldsburg’s opening kickoff at his 15-yard line and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The Trojans’ offense scored three times in the first quarter and the rout was on, with Findlay going on to win 61-14.
Findlay scored on drives of 75, 63 and 12 yards in the first quarter. Settlemire ran for touchdowns of 24 and 1 yard and quarterback Paul Cosiano had a 1-yard scoring run.
Findlay improved to 2-0. Reynoldsburg dropped to 1-1.
“They were bigger than us, stronger than us and faster than us, and they executed better than us,” said Reynoldsburg coach Buddy White, whose team lost at Findlay 17-16 in week two a year ago.
The Raiders’ defense did not have an answer for Settlemire on the ground or Cosiano through the air. The Trojans gained 290 total yards in the first half and did not punt. They finished with 585 total yards and punted just twice.
Settlemire finished with 17 carries for 158 yards and five touchdowns. Cosiano completed 10 of 10 passes for 205 yards with one touchdown.
Cosiano and Settlemire played just two series in the second half.
“(Settlemire) had a lot of big plays on us,” White said. “We were in position to make plays on some of them, but we either missed tackles or they ran through tackles because, again, they were just bigger and stronger.”
The Raiders crossed midfield just once in the first half, and that was after they trailed 34-0. They did not turn the ball over in the half, but punted four times and had just five first downs and 131 total yards.
Running back Kumar Collins, who sat out Reynoldsburg’s 10-9 win over New Albany on Aug. 24 with a bruised shoulder, carried 11 times for 29 yards.
Jordan Aekins was 9-for-18 passing for 124 yards and one touchdown. He also carried eight times for 101 yards.
Reynoldsburg scored on a 55-yard pass from Aekins to Tyree Tate late in the third quarter and on a 51-yard run by Dionta Brown early in the fourth.
Brown carried five times, all in the fourth quarter, for 132 yards.
“This one game, this loss, will not define our season,” White said. “We’re not going to stay down. We’ll be ready next week.”
