Quarterback Jared Drake ran for 202 yards and a touchdown and threw for 128 yards and two scores, including one in overtime to give the Westerville Central High School football team a 23-20 win over host New Albany on Aug. 31.
“Since day one, since he’s started coming here and working with us, he’s been an inspiration,” Warhawks coach John Magistro said of Drake, who transferred from Upper Arlington. “He never gets down. I don’t know what’s kicking in him, but we all should have a little bit of it.”
On the first possession of overtime, Trey Quillin kicked a 37-yard field goal for New Albany (0-2). Drake then connected with wide receiver Charlie Moushey on a 20-yard touchdown pass over the middle on the first play of Central’s possession to give the Warhawks (2-0) the win.
Drake threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Moushey with 1 minute, 21 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. Drake was 17-for-33 passing for 128 yards, and he rushed 24 times with a 39-yard score.
Both teams got off to slow starts, as Westerville Central led 3-0 at halftime.
“I thought we got tired,” Magistro said. “We lost our composure at times. Tonight our backs were against the wall, so we really had to fight. It took us a little while to get into that frame of mind.”
Eagles quarterback Darron Lee was 7-for-14 passing for 140 yards and a touchdown and had a 50-yard punt return for a score in the third quarter to give New Albany a 14-3 lead.
“We’ve had playoff atmospheres both this week and last week,” Eagles coach Mark Mueller said. “We’re playing a tough schedule. So we’re going to be battle ready. We keep getting better.”
