Hartley 50, East Knox 7
Hawks roll past Bulldogs to stay unbeaten
The Hartley High School football team continued its early-season dominance with a 50-7 home win over East Knox on Sept. 7.
“I thought it was very workmanlike,” said Hartley coach Brad Burchfield, whose team improved to 3-0 while East Knox fell to 2-1. “I think our kids did what they were expected to do and played hard.”
The Hawks took the lead when Ja’Wuan Woodley scored on a 10-yard run to cap a drive that included four penalties against Hartley and was kept alive when the Hawks converted a fake punt.
After Hartley took over at its own 8-yard line following a punt, an apparent 93-yard touchdown run by Marcellus Calhoun was called back because of a holding penalty. Woodley ran 46 yards up the left side, however, and Jared Brandewie connected with Dominique Scott for a 47-yard touchdown pass on the next play to make it 15-0 with 5 minutes, 45 second left in the first quarter.
Sam Mackowiak added a 38-yard scoring run on the Hawks’ third drive to make it 22-0 with 2:43 to play in the first quarter, and Calhoun scored on a 1-yard run with 9:46 to play in the second quarter to push the lead to 29-0.
Following the recovery of a pooch kick on the left sideline by Hez Moore, Brandewie found Jacob Matuska on the first play of the drive for a 29-yard touchdown pass to make it 36-0.
Hartley added two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 50-0 lead into halftime, as Calhoun scored on a 36-yard run and Woodley ran in from 4 yards out before Burchfield inserted his second string to start the second half.
“It was fun coming out and beating an undefeated team,” said Woodley, who gained 179 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. “We worked hard all week and came out and executed our game plan.”
Brandewie was 5-for-8 passing for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Calhoun ran 13 times for 97 yards and a touchdown.
