Olentangy Orange 21, Worthington Kilbourne 19

Pioneers hold off Wolves’ late rally

Triston Richardson and the Olentangy Orange High School football team didn’t expect to be in a tight situation against host Worthington Kilbourne after leading 21-6 in the waning minutes Sept. 7.

The Pioneers dominated most of the game, but the Wolves scored two touchdowns in the final 2 minutes, 41 seconds and needed Richardson’s defensive play to keep the game from going into overtime.

Richardson swatted away a two-point conversion pass attempt from Keaton Reinhart with 1:50 remaining, and the Pioneers recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock to win 21-19 and improve to 2-1.

“I saw the quarterback rolling out and just tried to drop into coverage,” Richardson said. “Thankfully I had enough time to get there.”

Reinhart had Grant Hartman open in the left side of the end zone, but the ball got there a tad late.

“These close ones really hurt, but at least we played hard and had a chance at the end,” Kilbourne coach Vince Trombetti said. “I told the kids at halftime that I didn’t want to be known as a team who only plays hard in the second half. We’ve got to start games better.”

The Wolves, who fell to 1-2, went 70 yards in 12 plays with Isaac Lumpkin running the final 2 to make it 21-13 with 2:41 left.

Kilbourne then recovered the onside kick and went 47 yards in five plays, with Lumpkin scoring from the 10.

“That’s definitely not the way we want to end the game,” Orange coach Brian Cross said. “We were just reaching to tackle. We weren’t using our shoulder pads and really hitting them and they nearly made us pay for it. We didn’t play well offensively in the second half at all and the defense created a lot of its own mess with sloppy tackling.”

Michael Forbes rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries for the Pioneers. He scored on runs of 4 and 14 in the first half as Orange led 14-3 at halftime.

Forbes’ 1-yard touchdown run made it 21-3 midway through the third quarter.

Jon Watson’s 26-yard field goal opened the scoring after Orange fumbled on its second play. Lumpkin ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
