The Westerville Central High School football team improved to 3-0 for the second consecutive season with a 41-0 victory over Thomas Worthington on Sept. 7 in its home opener.
Junior quarterback Jared Drake, a transfer from Upper Arlington, continued his impressive first season at Central by completing 15 of 23 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 152 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
“One of the things we tried to work on tonight is the passing game a little bit,” Central coach John Magistro said. “We’re trying to sharpen that up because when he gets that to the point where he wants it or we want it, it makes him that much better.”
The Warhawks took control early, scoring on their first three possessions to take a 17-0 halftime lead over the Cardinals, who fell to 0-3.
After Hunter Robertson kicked a 20-yard field goal, Drake threw touchdown passes to Charlie Moushey (39 yards) and David Alexander (14 yards).
Thomas’ defense kept Central off the scoreboard the rest of the half, with Jalen Wells intercepting a Drake pass with 1 minute, 11 seconds left in the half.
The Cardinals were limited to four first downs in the first half.
Central added to its lead early in the second half when Drake broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run, making it 24-0 with 9:14 left in the third quarter.
“It’s kind of strange when you lose a game 41-0, but I felt like we played maybe our best game,” Thomas coach Scott Gordon said. “That sounds a little crazy, but our guys played hard. We moved the ball some. We were just having a devil of a time getting the ball in the end zone. We had our defense out there too long and they got us on some big plays.”
