Football - Game of the Week

Gahanna 45, Upper Arlington 7

Lions' offense comes alive in rout of Bears

Defense had carried the Gahanna Lincoln High School football team in two close victories to start the season, so it was little wonder that Lions coach John Snoad was practically giddy after a 45-7 victory over visiting Upper Arlington on Sept. 7.

“I’ve told the guys it’s time for people to talk about our team, not just our defense, and offensively we did some great things tonight,” said Snoad, whose team improved to 3-0 while UA dropped to 1-2. “This is an explosion for us. We put up 21 last week (against Strongsville) and that was the most for us all year. We didn’t even score a touchdown in our preseason scrimmages. It’s just taken some time for us to get our feet underneath us.”

Lions senior quarterback Alec Tuohy was 13-for-18 passing for 179 yards and a touchdown, senior running back Valquez Davis had 127 yards and two touchdowns on four carries and two catches for 35 yards, and Gahanna’s spread offense was flawless at times.

“Against a good team, that’s probably the best offensive effort we’ve had in a long time,” Davis said. “We’ve always had the talent. It’s just been a matter of execution. Tonight, everything clicked.”

Davis’ 20-yard touchdown run and Geoffrey Helms II’s 5-yard score in the first made it 14-0. The second score capped a four-play, 95-yard drive.

Only back-to-back Gahanna drives marred by penalties kept UA close before halftime. The Bears had minus-16 yards rushing until Gus Ackley’s 80-yard touchdown run with five seconds left in the first half. That accounted for more than half of UA’s 145 total yards.

“We contained the outside really well. We thought that was the best way to stop them,” Gahanna senior defensive lineman Granyl Davis said. “Other than that one big mistake (Ackley’s run) we did a great job. We were really angry after that.”

Emile Camm added two interceptions for Gahanna.

Davis scored from 6 yards midway through the third quarter. His younger brother, Vasean, had touchdown runs of 15 and 30 yards in the fourth.

UA has lost consecutive games, against Gahanna and Cincinnati Elder, by the same 45-7 score.
