Quarterback Tommy Horn totaled 285 yards to lead the Hilliard Bradley High School football team over visiting Westland 42-0 on Sept. 7 in a game halted with 1 minute, 7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter because of lightning.
Horn was 8-for-14 passing for 222 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 63 yards and another score.
“We had great efforts from everyone and that led to big plays,” Horn said. “Football is a team sport and when you work together, good things happen.”
Bradley (3-0) had 10 plays of 15 yards or more, including touchdown runs of 59 and 22 yards by Matt Bryant and a 50-yard touchdown reception by Zack Popovec.
“We’re not really a big play type of team, but we have good athletes and we have to take what we are given,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “We would have liked to have been a little chunky at times with the plays and burn the clock.”
Bryant caught a 31-yard pass from Horn to the Cougars’ 9-yard line on Bradley’s opening drive to set up a 4-yard touchdown run by T.J. Martin.
On the Jaguars’ next possession, Bryant ran 59 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead.
“We can’t put our offense in a hole like that,” Westland coach Steve White said. “You can’t do that against a good team like they have.”
Martin led Bradley in rushing with 86 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Reilly Butz had 118 total yards, including a 46-yard kickoff return to begin the second half and a 46-yard reception.
The Jaguars rushed 39 times for 295 yards and had 517 total yards. Butz and Popovec both caught two passes for 61 yards and Jacob Pugh added two receptions for 60 yards.
Quarterback Jalen Brown rushed for 135 yards on 26 carries to lead the Cougars (1-2).
