Wilson powers Celtics past Jaguars

Donovan Wilson rushed for 239 yards on 36 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Dublin Jerome High School football team to a 28-26 win Sept. 14 over Hilliard Bradley in the OCC-Cardinal Division opener.

With his team leading by two, Wilson secured the Celtics’ win when he powered for 1 yard to his team’s 32-yard line on third-and-1 with 45 seconds remaining.

“It felt great out there all night,” said Wilson, a senior who has verbally committed to Georgia Tech. “My line was opening things up for me. They did it all.”

The Celtics (2-2) took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. Stephen Romanelli scored on a 5-yard run and Wilson ran in the two-point conversion with 3:25 left in the first quarter.

Wilson later caught a screen pass from quarterback Jake King for an 81-yard score with 10:45 left in the first half.

Bradley’s T.J. Martin had two 5-yard touchdown runs before halftime to pull the Jaguars within 14-12.

“It was a tale of two games,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “We couldn’t play defense early and we played well on offense, and when we started stiffening up on defense our offense cooled off.”

The teams traded scores in the second half. Wilson scored on a 35-yard run and Steve Kidwell scored on a 48-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter for Jerome.

Martin, who had 80 yards on 19 carries, added a 6-yard touchdown run and Jacob Pugh had a 3-yard scoring run for Bradley (3-1).

Wilson said the Celtics looked at the OCC-Cardinal season as a new opportunity.

“We had good practices all week and we told each other this was a new season,” he said. “This was a way for us to prove ourselves.”

Tommy Horn completed 13 of 20 passes for 166 yards for Bradley. He also rushed for 49 yards on 11 carries.

King was 4-for-9 passing for 124 yards for Jerome.
