The Ready High School football team used a stingy defense and a punishing running game to defeat Grove City Christian 48-3 on Sept. 14 in the first meeting between the programs.
The Silver Knights, coming off a pair of back-to-back 4-6 seasons, improved to 4-0. It’s their best start since they began the 2009 season 5-0 en route to an 8-2 finish.
"It feels good because it's a lot of hard work that goes into it," first-year Ready coach Joel Cutler said.
"It feels great," Ready's Doug Strickler, one of just four seniors, said of the team's strong start. "The last couple of years we have been under .500. The attitude is up and we're so excited to get out here and play."
The Silver Knights dominated from the beginning and their defense limited the Eagles (2-2) to fewer than 100 yards of total offense.
The Eagles’ only score came when Tristan Taylor's 37-yard field goal bounced off the crossbar and fell over.
"The defense keeps improving," Cutler said. "They are awfully tough to run against, at least right now. We are pleased with how they are getting better on that side of the ball."
Meanwhile, the offense was led by the rushing tandem of Strickler and Akili Taylor.
Taylor finished with 217 yards on 11 carries, including a 52-yard touchdown.
Strickler gained 196 yards on 10 carries with touchdowns of 4, 37 and 69 yards. He also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass.
"We have a long way to go," Cutler said. "We're not there yet, but we have a ton of potential."
