Reynoldsburg 26, Grove City 16
Raiders beat Dawgs in OCC-Ohio opener
The Reynoldsburg High School football team was called for five personal fouls, had three touchdowns called back because of penalties and lost three fumbles in its OCC-Ohio Division opener at Grove City on Sept. 14.
And the Raiders still won 26-16 to improve to 3-1 overall.
"We came here to get a win and you guys got the win," Reynoldsburg coach Buddy White told his players after the game. "It wasn't pretty. We had a lot of penalties. Maybe the referees saw something that we (coaches) didn't see on the sidelines. … We should have won this game 43-3."
Grove City, which fell to 1-3 overall, scored first on a 49-yard field goal by Drew Nankivell with 7 minutes, 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The rest of the half was all Reynoldsburg, however, as senior running back Dionta Brown turned the left corner and ran 68 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing drive.
“It was early in the game and I wasn't tired and I pulled away from the defenders," said Brown, who finished with 187 yards on 15 carries.
After the Raiders' first fumble with 9:54 left in the second quarter, the Dawgs marched 49 yards to the Reynoldsburg 28-yard-line before 240-pound senior defensive lineman Devon Bollinger ripped the ball away from Grove City running back Corey Williams and took it 38 yards the other way.
Reynoldsburg quarterback Jordan Aekins capped a seven-play, 43-yard drive with a keeper from the 1-yard line, making it 14-3 at halftime.
The Raiders rushed 22 times in the first half for 220 yards and Aekins was 5-for-7 passing for 52 yards, while Grove City was held to 64 yards from scrimmage and five first downs in the first two quarters.
On the Raiders' first possession of the second half, Reynoldsburg converted three third-down plays and senior running back A.J. Mitchell scored on an 18-yard run to make it 20-3. Mitchell finished with 125 yards on 16 carries.
In the fourth quarter, Grove City quarterback Cameron Meece threw scoring passes to Chad Moore (6 yards) and Justin Waddle (77 yards) and Brown had a 14-yard touchdown run.
