Dawgs’ rushing attack overwhelms Cruisers
The Grove City High School football team used a three-pronged rushing attack to roll past host Groveport 42-24 in an OCC-Ohio Division contest Sept. 21.
Quarterback Cameron Meece rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries and Corey Williams (13 carries, 98 yards) and Jake Norbut (8 carries, 66 yards) each reached the end zone once as the Dawgs racked up 392 yards on the ground.
Grove City, which improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the OCC-Ohio, took a 28-3 halftime lead with 21 second-quarter points.
Groveport (1-4, 0-2), which had just 44 total yards in the first half, scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including Markel Davis' 51-yard run with 5 minutes, 38 seconds left. Davis rushed four times for 59 yards and caught five passes for 52 yards.
"We're a young team and we know our offense is going to be a work in progress, but these young guys are working hard. They don't give up and they're going to be here a couple more years," Groveport coach Tim Brown said.
The Dawgs outgained the Cruisers 405-215.
Grove City's lead reached 35-3 when Williams scored on a 9-yard run with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
Meece scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards in the first half and broke free for a 70-yard score with 8:41 left to make it 42-10.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Dawgs, who lost to Reynoldsburg 26-16 on Sept. 14 and Westerville South 42-20 on Sept. 7.
