The Westerville Central High School football team jumped out to a 12-0 lead early in the second quarter on its way to a 33-10 victory over visiting Hilliard Bradley on Sept. 28.
The Warhawks improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the OCC-Cardinal Division.
“I’m very happy,” Central coach John Magistro said. “We had some kids step it up. I thought our defense played real well. This team gave (Westerville) South fits last week and they’re not a bad football team. We did a nice job tonight.”
Bradley, which lost its third consecutive game, fell to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Central junior quarterback Jared Drake rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
The Warhawks took control early, as Drake scored on an 11-yard run to cap the game’s first possession. He then hit Micah Lowe for a 22-yard touchdown 12 seconds into the second quarter.
Drake capped the first-half scoring by eluding defenders near the line of scrimmage en route to a 42-yard touchdown run with 8:55 left in the first half.
Bradley’s Josias Cruceta and Cameron Hart recovered Drake fumbles in the second quarter, but the Jaguars could not capitalize.
Central had a 214-76 advantage in total yards during the first half and finished with a 382-164 advantage.
“It just came down to execution and they made some plays and in football that’s what it’s about,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “They came up with big plays. We had them in third and long often and they came up with the plays.
“Offensively, we just didn’t execute. We didn’t execute well across the board. We have a lot of work to do going forward.”
