Meece propels Dawgs past Wildcats

On a night Grove City High School honored its 1972 undefeated football team, the current Dawgs made their predecessors proud by producing a convincing 34-14 win over visiting Newark on Sept. 28.

Grove City improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the OCC-Ohio Division.

"We mentioned that at the beginning," Dawgs coach Matt Jordan said. "They were the first undefeated team here. We played well and hopefully that class of '72 was happy with what they saw."

After finding themselves trailing 7-0, the Dawgs scored 34 unanswered points, mostly because of a rushing attack that finished with more than 400 yards.

"That's big for us," Jordan said. "We've had issues overcoming adversity. It's good to see us do that tonight and good to see us correct the mistakes and get it fixed and play solid football the rest of the game."

Leading the offense was quarterback Cameron Meece, who ran for 139 yards on 17 carries with touchdowns of 38, 2 and 4 yards. Also contributing were Corey Williams (11 carries for 73 yards), Jay Sheffield (8 carries for 58 yards) and Jake Norbut (8 carries for 41 yards).

"The offensive line is doing a great job up front," Jordan said. "Meece is doing a much better of reading and doing things he needs to do. The backs are hitting the holes hard. That's what makes us tick."

Newark dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the OCC-Ohio. Quarterback Grant Russell scored both of the Wildcats’ touchdowns on 1-yard runs and completed 18 of 33 passes for 246 yards with two interceptions.
