Dublin Scioto 42, Dublin Jerome 23
Houston’s running lifts Irish over Celtics
The Dublin Scioto High School football team rallied to defeat host Dublin Jerome 42-23 on Oct. 5 behind the running of Will Houston.
Houston rushed for 144 yards -- 135 in the second half -- on 25 carries with touchdowns of 3, 2 and 7 yards. The latter two scores came in the final two quarters.
The Irish improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the OCC-Cardinal Division. Jerome fell to 3-4 and 2-2.
Anthony Davis’ 90-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2 minutes, 46 seconds left in the game sealed the win for Scioto.
The Irish trailed 16-7 when quarterback Evan DeMars connected with Travis Yates for a 29-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half, pulling Scioto within 16-14.
“We came in the game 5-1 and I thought we didn’t have a great first half,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “It’s hard to keep yourself motivated when you’re having success. We talked about that all week. I thought our kids responded after (Jerome) got out to a lead.”
Jerome used the running of Donovan Wilson to take a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Wilson capped a 17-play, 84-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-2 with 3:46 left in the first quarter. Wilson accounted for 65 yards on the drive.
Wilson, a Georgia Tech recruit, rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns on 49 carries.
Mitchell Keller’s 35-yard field goal pushed the lead to 10 points with 11:15 left in the second quarter. Cam Willms’ interception set up the score.
After Scioto pulled to within 10-7 on Houston’s first touchdown run with 9:51 left in the second quarter, Jerome answered with Wilson’s 8-yard touchdown run with 3:16 left. The two-point conversion run failed, leaving Jerome in front 16-7.
Wilson also had a 3-yard touchdown run.
“I didn’t think we played all that bad in the second half,” Jerome coach Mark Hundley said. “The interception they returned for a touchdown obviously was a nail in the coffin. When it came to the second-half play, I never felt like we were out of the game, regardless of what the score was.”
