Pickerington North 49, Reynoldsburg 27
Panthers roll past Raiders to stay unbeaten
The Pickerington High School North football team improved to 5-0 all-time against visiting Reynoldsburg and continued a perfect regular season with a 49-27 victory on Oct. 5.
Jake Butt had three touchdown catches and Godwin Igwebuike rushed for three scores for the Panthers, who improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the OCC-Ohio Division.
The Raiders dropped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.
“We knew if we jumped on them early that we could get it done,” Butt said. “Me, (quarterback Mason Olszewski) and the rest of the receivers are all on the same page and our running backs are doing a great job.”
North took a 7-0 lead with 8 minutes, 9 seconds to go in the opening quarter when Butt jumped for a 22-yard touchdown reception from Olszewski in the left corner of the end zone.
Reynoldsburg quarterback Jordan Aekins fumbled at his own 25 on the third play of the ensuing possession and North’s Frankie Weirick fell on the ball at the Raiders’ 17.
On the next play, Olszewski found a wide open Butt on the right side of the end zone to make it 14-0.
The Panthers took a 21-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter on a 4-yard run by Igwebuike.
Reynoldsburg responded with a nine-play, 62-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard run by Jordan Aekins on fourth-and-goal with 7:02 to go in the first half.
On the second play of North’s next possession, however, Igwebuike broke a tackle just past the line of scrimmage, reversed field and broke for a 75-yard touchdown run that made it 28-7.
Igwebuike added a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:01 to go in the second quarter and Olszewski hit Butt for an 11-yard scoring pass with 20 seconds left before halftime for a 42-7 lead.
The Raiders scored three second-half touchdowns.
“They’re a heck of a team and we didn’t block well or tackle well,” Raiders coach Buddy White said. “At least we didn’t roll over.”
Igwebuike finished with 15 rushes for 130 yards as he surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season.
Butt had four catches for 56 yards. In addition to passing for 79 yards and rushing for 68 yards, Olszewski blocked an extra point after Reynoldsburg’s second touchdown.
The Panthers held Reynoldsburg to 36 yards of offense in the first half. The Raiders’ Kumar Collins rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.
