Lions stay in playoff race by defeating Dawgs

The Gahanna Lincoln High School football team continued its quest for the postseason with a 31-20 victory at Grove City on Oct. 12.

The Lions improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in OCC-Ohio Division play. Heading into the contest with the Dawgs, the Lions were clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in Division I, Region 3.

"We're really proud to be where we are," Gahanna coach John Snoad said. "We've had some rocky performances here and there. Overall, it feels really good. This is a tough place to play."

The Lions took a 14-0 lead courtesy of scoring runs from Granyl Smith and Connor Prusz.

Meanwhile, the Lions continued to receive strong play from their defense, forcing the Dawgs to go three-and-out on their first three possessions. The Dawgs failed to pick up a first down until early in the second quarter.

"It's no secret, we have a really good defense," Snoad said. "No doubt about it, every week in and week out, they have been the rock of this team."

Grove City managed to pull within a point on a 40-yard scoring run by Cameron Meece sandwiched between a pair of Drew Nankivell field goals, including one from 47 yards as time expired in the first half.

"I told them, 'Don't panic,’” Snoad said of his team’s 14-13 halftime lead. "We just had to do our thing and quit making stupid mistakes. It was a better second half for us."

Gahanna scored the next 17 points.

"I think we executed better in the second half," Snoad said. "Keeping them off the field was huge."
The Dawgs fell to 3-5 and 2-3. Meece had 66 yards rushing on 16 carries.
