Johnnies fall to Danville, see MBC winning streak snapped

By ThisWeek Community News  •

Quarterback Bryce Staats rushed for 252 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Danville High School football team past visiting Johnstown-Monroe 42-35 in an MBC contest Oct. 12.

The loss snapped a 14-game league winning streak for the Johnnies, who dropped to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the MBC. The Blue Devils improved to 7-1 and 5-0.

Staats scored on runs of 78 and 72 yards and was 11-for-23 passing for 132 yards. Wide receiver Corey Geog caught both of Staats' touchdown passes (8 and 7 yards) and scored on a 6-yard run on a reverse on fourth-and-5 to give the Blue Devils a 42-27 lead with 5 minutes, 12 seconds remaining.

“We gave it to our speed guy,” Danville coach Ed Honabarger said of the reverse. “And (the Johnnies) bit hard on Bryce.”

Johnstown answered on the ensuing possession, as a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Thompson and the two-point conversion made it 42-35 with 2:10 left. However, the ensuing onside kick did not travel the required 10 yards, giving Danville the ball near midfield. The Blue Devils were able to run out the clock.

“We knew they were a physical team and we tried to match them,” Honabarger said. “It was just a whale of a game.”

Kyle Schultz also scored for the Blue Devils on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, helping Danville take a 28-14 lead into halftime.

Thompson rushed for 167 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown, on 22 carries and tailback Cody Farley ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns (2, 1 and 8 yards) on 26 carries to lead Johnstown.

“(Staats) is a wonderful athlete and (Danville) played a great ballgame,” Johnstown coach Mike Carter said. “But our kids never gave up and kept fighting through the adversity of being behind. I’m proud of the way our kids never gave up.”

Johnstown had 11 penalties for 115 yards and Danville had four for 35 yards.
