Green Wave blasts Rams to stay atop MSL-Ohio

By ThisWeek Community News  •

The Newark Catholic High School football team remained atop the MSL-Ohio Division with a 41-6 victory over Whitehall on Oct. 12 at Gahanna.

It was the final home game for Whitehall, which is playing its home games at neutral sites because of a renovation project at the high school.

The Green Wave have won seven in a row to improve to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the league. Newark Catholic’s lone setback was 34-20 to Ready in the opener Aug. 25.

Whitehall fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Newark Catholic took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Rams 28-0. The Green Wave scored on four consecutive possessions in the first half.

Junior quarterback Chayce Crouch led Newark Catholic, tossing touchdown passes of 31 and 52 yards and adding a 4-yard scoring run in the first half.

The Green Wave's lone points in the second half came on a Kevin Bourne 63-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“Chayce threw the ball very well,” Newark Catholic coach Bill Franks said. “We showed good balance, spread the ball around and made plays, and found a way to go 1-0 this week.”

The Green Wave took advantage of two Whitehall turnovers in the second quarter.

Senior running back Isaiah Turner led the Rams, rushing for 119 yards on 28 carries.

Whitehall sophomore quarterback Tristen Ritchie capped a 97-yard drive in the fourth quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 24 seconds left.

“We have a lot of young guys out here and we just have to be a little more aggressive, especially on defense,” Whitehall coach Jake Kuhner said. “We just have to get to the quarterback faster.”
