Hale, defense carry Cougars past Bearcats
Rainy conditions and a sloppy field indicated early on to Beechcroft High School senior quarterback Maurice Hale that it was going to be a difficult night to pass the ball Oct. 19 at Brookhaven.
Hale instead used his feet to slice through the Bearcats’ defense for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-0 win.
It marked the third consecutive victory in the series for Beechcroft, which improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the City League-North Division.
Brookhaven slipped to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the league.
“After the first couple passes, I knew it was going to be tough to pass,” Hale said. “When I saw them bringing pressure, I just had to make a quick read.”
Hale gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes, 27 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 31-yard touchdown run. He added a 4-yard scoring run with 5:03 left before halftime.
Brookhaven had one of its more successful drives of the game stopped when Darius Ford intercepted a pass from quarterback Kevin Greenhow at the Cougars’ 30 with 24 seconds left in the first half.
The Bearcats’ opening drive of the second half stalled at the Beechcroft 41, and the Cougars took advantage by driving 77 yards on five plays on the ensuing drive.
Adonis Davis opened the possession with a 20-yard run and Hale ran for 33 and 12 yards before scoring on a 9-yard run.
Brookhaven’s next drive ended when Greenhow fumbled into the hands of Antonio Davis at the Beechcroft 25.
“It feels great to get a shutout, especially against a team like Brookhaven,” Cougars coach Bruce Ward said. “We knew they’re always going to bring pressure, and we have Hale so the other guys have to stop us.”
Greenhow was limited to 2-for-10 passing for 12 yards. He was 0-for-7 in the first half.
“Everything was slippery,” Brookhaven coach Trevor White said. “The flat-out difference in the game was Maurice Hale.”
