The Northland High School football team trailed 22-6 at halftime against host Whetstone, but the Vikings scored four touchdowns in the second half to rally for a 34-28 victory in the City League-North Division on Oct. 19.
The winning score came on an 80-yard punt return by Jhustus Cornley with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left in the game
"I’m happy,” said Northland coach Kevin Tooson, whose team improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the City-North. “We didn’t have a good game last week (in a 13-6 loss to Mifflin). One game can lead into two and we didn’t come out too strong in the first half. So it feels good to come out with the win.”
Whetstone, which fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the league, opened the scoring when junior quarterback Ramroth Finnegan connected with senior running back Damon Rosemond for a 29-yard touchdown pass with 9:48 remaining in the first quarter.
The Vikings went ahead 8-6 three minutes later when sophomore running back Abu Turay scored on a 42-yard run and added the two-point conversion, but the Braves got a 15-yard scoring pass from Finnegan to Yusef Conteh and a 14-yard scoring run by Rosemond to build a 16-point lead at halftime.
After the teams traded touchdowns to open the second half, Northland scored three unanswered touchdowns to pull out the victory.
Running back Nateshawn Hargrove had a 15-yard touchdown run in the third and quarterback Glen Smith ran in from 3 yards in the fourth to tie the game before Cornley’s late punt return. Smith finished 5-for-13 passing for 82 yards and carried nine times for 22 yards for the Vikings.
