The Hartley High School football team defeated visiting Ready 42-8 on Oct. 26 to finish the regular season undefeated for the second season in a row and the second time in school history.

The Hawks -- who captured the CCL-Gold title with the victory -- entered the game ranked first in Division IV, Region 14 and will play host to a first-round playoff game Nov. 2 after going 10-0 in the regular season.

The running back tandem of Ja’Wuan Woodley and Marcellus Calhoun did most of the damage against the Silver Knights, who finished the regular season 7-2.

Woodley carried 22 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns and Calhoun ran 19 times for 152 yards and also scored two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jared Brandewie completed all three of his pass attempts for 57 yards, including two for touchdowns.

Brandewie connected with Dominique Scott for a 34-yard scoring pass midway through the first quarter to put Hartley up 13-0, and his 18-yard touchdown pass to Scott late in the first half made it 28-0 at the break.

The Hawks gained 385 yards rushing, but coach Brad Burchfield said his team also can move through the air.

“We can throw,” Burchfield said. “That first touchdown Jared threw was fantastic. It’s hard to take away everything the offense can do and we’re good at taking what the defense gives us.”

Hartley took charge early, as the Hawks drove 75 yards in nine plays on the opening possession with Woodley scoring on a 3-yard run.

After a three-and-out for Ready, the Hawks drove 78 yards in seven plays to go up 13-0 with 5 minutes, 51 seconds left in the first quarter on Brandewie’s first touchdown pass to Scott.

Hartley’s Nick King intercepted Ready quarterback Matt Yoho on the next possession and the Hawks converted that turnover into points when Brandewie threw to Scott for a 17-yard score.

Following a blocked punt, Hartley scored again late in the half on a 10-yard run by Calhoun for a 28-0 lead at the break.

Calhoun added a 58-yard run and Woodley added a 3-yard run in the third quarter to push the advantage to 42-0.

The Silver Knights scored their only touchdown on a 1-yard run by Yoho late in the fourth quarter with Hartley’s starting defense on the bench.

“We always want to keep it going as long as we can,” Burchfield said. “We’ve got a lot of good players and they are a lot of fun to be around.”

Ready coach Joel Cutler was not available after the game for the Silver Knights, who were led on offense by Akili Taylor (19 carries for 137 yards).

Ready’s Doug Strickler, who entered the game with 903 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns, carried 12 times for 4 yards.
