Wildcats take advantage of Shamrocks’ ‘turnover bug’
The Hilliard Davidson High School football team took advantage of four Dublin Coffman turnovers to win 17-14 in a first round Division I, Region 3 playoff game Nov. 3 at Coffman.
The seventh-seeded Wildcats improved to 9-2 and will play third-seeded Olentangy in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10.
The second-seeded Shamrocks finished the season 9-2.
“The turnover bug hit them late in the season,” said Davidson coach Brian White, whose team lost to Coffman 33-10 on Sept. 14. “It did last week against Upper Arlington and sometimes when that bug comes around it’s inexplicable how you can’t put a stop to it. Our kids made a couple good plays tonight on a couple interceptions.”
Coffman opened the game with a seven-play, 82-yard drive ending on a 3-yard touchdown run by Bilal Williamson with 10 minutes, 18 seconds left in the first quarter.
From there, Davidson’s defense held Coffman off the scoreboard until late in the game.
Late in the second quarter, Davidson took advantage of a Williamson fumble to tie the game at 7 on a 1-yard touchdown run by E.J. Jennings. On the ensuing possession, Davidson’s Markus Bailey intercepted Coffman quarterback James Walsh. Five plays later, Jennings threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Alex Backenstoe to give the Wildcats a 14-7 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the half.
Davidson’s defense continued to contain Coffman in the second half. Nick Stull intercepted another Walsh pass resulting in a 21-yard field goal by Jack Johns and the Wildcats led 17-7 with 5:05 left in the game.
Coffman closed to within 17-14 on Walsh’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Terry Glenn with 1:45 remaining, but Davidson’s Phillipie Motley recovered the ensuing onside kick. Davidson would be forced to punt, but Coffman had one play from scrimmage and was unable to move the ball.
“We had a fumble and three interceptions,” Coffman coach Mark Crabtree said. “They at least led to their first two touchdowns, short field and all that. I wish I had a definite answer on why the last two weeks we continually turned the ball over. I don’t have an answer, but we’ll go back and take a look. It’s not going to help us with this year, but we’ll figure out what happened and try and make our team better from it and go from there.”
