Girls Soccer - Div. III State Final
Ready falls to Miami East in state final
FAIRBORN -- The Ready High School girls volleyball team lost a tightly-contested first game against Casstown Miami East in the Division III state final Nov. 10 at Wright State University's Nutter Center and never recovered.
The Silver Knights, who were making their first state final appearance, lost 28-26, 25-15, 25-17 to finish 20-9.
Miami East, which didn’t lose a game during the postseason on the way to capturing its second consecutive state championship, finished 29-1.
There were 13 ties and four lead changes in the first game, but the Vikings survived to take a 1-0 lead and controlled the remainder of the match.
“It takes a lot out of you to lose a game like that,” said Ready senior Karley Kusan, a University of Akron recruit who had seven kills in the first game and 15 in the match. “The adrenaline is pumping, but then (when you lose a close game) it’s a letdown. We kind of let ourselves down after that.”
The Silver Knights led 6-1 in the third game, but Miami East rallied to tie it at 8. The Vikings later scored nine consecutive points to take a 19-10 lead.
“It was a great atmosphere, and we’re proud to be a part of the championship in Division III,” coach Mike Kusan said. “I thought we came out ready to play and gave them everything we had in that first game. They came out in the second game and they dominated. Their net play was better than ours and they took us out of our game. Give them all the credit.”
Ready defeated Orrville 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 in a state semifinal Nov. 9. A year ago, the Silver Knights made it to the state tournament for the first time but lost to Gates Mills Gilmour Academy 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 in a semifinal.
