Playoffs - Division IV, Region 14 Final

Hartley 41, Ottawa-Glandorf 31

Hawks rally in fourth quarter to beat Titans

PIQUA -- The Hartley High School football team got the break it was looking for against Ottawa-Glandorf in the Division IV, Region 14 final Nov. 16 at Piqua with 3 minutes, 53 seconds to go.

That’s when Titans quarterback Caleb Siefker, who already had thrown four touchdowns against the Hawks' defense, fumbled and linebacker Nick King fell on the loose ball at the Ottawa-Glandorf 40-yard line.

Marcellus Calhoun scored on a 2-yard run on the ensuing possession with 2:16 left to secure Hartley's 41-31 victory.

The Hawks improved to 13-0 and advanced to play Clarksville Clinton-Massie in a state semifinal Nov. 23 at a site to be determined. Ottawa-Glandorf, which was second in the final state poll behind Hartley, finished 12-1.

“(Siefker) fumbled it and I fell on it,” said King, who also had four tackles for loss or no gain. “We’d been waiting for that one mistake and we took advantage of it.”

Hartley scored on a 56-yard halfback pass from Ja’Wuan Woodley to Alonzo Saxton with 5:58 left in the first quarter and a 2-yard run by Woodley with 10:03 remaining in the second quarter but trailed 17-14 at halftime.

In the opening drive of the second half, Hartley went for it on fourth-and-3 from the Ottawa-Glandorf 38, but Woodley was stopped for a 1-yard gain.

The Titans scored four plays later on a 6-yard run by Tristan Parker to make it 24-14.

Hartley answered with an eight-play, 48-yard drive that was sparked by a 35-yard kickoff return by Dominique Scott. Sam Mackowiak capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 24-20 but the Hawks missed the extra point.

Hartley took a 27-24 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Woodley on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the Titans responded with an eight-play, 64-yard scoring drive capped by a 30-yard run by Siefker to retake the lead at 31-27.

Calhoun scored on a 9-yard run with 5:16 to go to give Hartley a 34-31 lead and Ottawa-Glandorf’s next possession ended with Siefker’s fumble.

After Hartley’s final touchdown, Ottawa-Glandorf drove to the Hawks' 19 but Siefker missed a 36-yard field-goal attempt that would have cut the deficit to 41-34.

Calhoun, who said he broke his nose at some point in the fourth quarter, had 103 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Woodley rushed for 102 yards and two scores on 19 attempts.

Siefker had 19 carries for 124 yards and Parker had 123 yards on 21 rushes for Ottawa-Glandorf.

“We really had a lot of problems defensively but kind of found a way to get it done,” Hawks coach Brad Burchfield said.
