The setup

The 49ers are seeking a return to the glory days. They have a perfect 5-0 record in Super Bowls, but they haven’t played for a ring since beating San Diego in 1995. The Falcons have played in one Super Bowl — a 1999 loss to Denver — and are trying to fully erase their reputation of late for earlier-than-expected playoff exits.

Key matchup

Falcons defense

vs. 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick

Last week, Atlanta struggled to stop Seattle QB Russell Wilson, a dynamic rookie capable of beating a team with his arm or his legs. Today, the Falcons face Kaepernick, who is similar to Wilson but is 6 inches taller, and likely stronger and faster. Starting with the defensive ends and outside linebackers, Atlanta wants to keep Kaepernick in a box so he can’t break anything like the spectacular 56-yard sprint to the end zone he made against Green Bay last week. Kaepernick torched the Packers for 181 yards and two TDs on the ground, and he also threw for 263 yards and two scores.

Stats and stuff

Kaepernick has passed for 12 TDs with four interceptions and rushed for four TDs while posting a 6-2 record as a starter. … Atlanta QB Matt Ryan is 34-6 in the Georgia Dome. … Falcons DE John Abraham (ankle) is questionable. He leads all active players with 126 career sacks. … Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez has played in 260 games (six in the playoffs) in his 16-year career, and he has one postseason win — last week. … The 49ers have won an NFL-best 16 division titles since 1980. … The Falcons blew a 27-7 lead last week and needed a late rally to beat Seattle. … San Francisco has the NFL’s third-ranked defense; Atlanta is No. 24. The Falcons offense is No. 8, the 49ers No. 11.

Fun fact

In the only previous time these teams met in the playoffs, the Falcons intercepted 49ers QB Steve Young three times in the second half and won a divisional game after the 1998 season. Atlanta went on to play in the Super Bowl.

How it might play out

The game would seem to be in the hands of the Falcons defense. It must improve its tackling from last week, especially against Kaepernick, and not let him get significant yards after being hit. Ryan and the Falcons receiving corps of Roddy White and Julio Jones, along with Gonzalez, can put up the points, but can the defense limit San Francisco enough?
