The Watterson High School boys basketball team rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Brookhaven 56-52 in overtime in a Division II district final March 8 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The second-seeded Eagles stretched their winning streak to 18 games and improved to 24-1. Watterson will face Sandusky Perkins or Toledo Scott in a regional semifinal at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Bowling Green State University.
The top-seeded Bearcats finished 21-4.
Guard Randal Clarkson scored nine of his game-high 23 points in the second quarter to help Brookhaven take a 32-21 halftime lead, and he converted a three-point play with 6 minutes left in the third quarter to put the Bearcats ahead 35-23.
But guard Cody Calhoun scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and overtime to help Watterson rally for the win.
Calhoun made two free throws to put the Eagles up 55-52 with 20.3 seconds left, and after Clarkson missed a 3-pointer, post player Matt Hughes got the rebound, was fouled and made a free throw with 11.9 seconds remaining to ice the game.
“What a battle,” Watterson coach Vince Lombardo said. “We did an outstanding job with our half-court defense in the second half and that’s what made the difference.”
