Johnstown unable to solve Fort Frye’s defense in regional final


LOGAN -- Sophomore forward Paige Cannon scored 24 points for the Johnstown-Monroe High School girls basketball team, but an aggressive Beverly Fort Frye defense seized control to defeat the Johnnies 58-43 in a Division III regional final March 9 at Logan.

Fort Frye improved to 24-3 and advance to play defending state champion Africentric at 3 p.m. in a state semifinal March 14 at Ohio State. The sixth-ranked Nubians defeated third-ranked Archbold 60-42 on March 9 at Lexington.

Johnstown trailed 17-9 after the first quarter, but cut Fort Frye’s lead to 30-26 at halftime. Junior forward Makenzie Spang had a layup with 7 minutes, 22 seconds left in the third period to pull the Johnnies to within 30-28, but Johnstown could come no closer.

Junior guard Laiken Valentine added eight points and Spang had six points for Johnstown, who finished 23-5.

Senior guard Morgan Liedtke scored 16 points with four 3-pointers to lead Fort Frye and  senior guard Taylor Buchanan added 11 points.
