Watterson wins program’s first regional title
The Watterson High School boys basketball team beat Lima Bath 57-47 in a Division II regional final March 16 at Bowling Green State University to capture its first regional championship.
The Eagles improved to 26-1 and will face Kettering Alter in a state semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Ohio State University.
Bath finished 23-5.
“It feels good to be a part of a team that’s made Watterson history,” senior post player Bryan Jackson said. ”We’ll always be remembered as the first Watterson team to set the bar this high.”
Post player Matt Hughes scored a career-high 22 points and had 11 rebounds, including nine in the third quarter, as the Eagles took a 36-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Forward Matt Lehmann scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles stretch their winning streak to 21 games.
“I thought there were two keys to winning this game, which were handling their pressure and containing their 3-point shooters,” Watterson coach Vince Lombardo said. “I think we did well in both areas.”
