Walnut Ridge's Toney quarterbacks East to victory
The East all-star football team beat the West all-stars 43-22 in the sixth-annual Cap City Preps Senior Bowl on June 15 at Reynoldsburg.
Walnut Ridge High School quarterback Marquez Toney passed for 216 yards and two touchdowns and was named the East’s MVP. He threw touchdown passes of 50 yards to Mifflin wide receiver Kamaron Green and 16 yards to Independence wide receiver Dominic Ward.
Reynoldsburg running back Dionta Brown added a 16-yard touchdown run and Independence running back Vincent Rambo added a 3-yard scoring reception from Mifflin quarterback JaVonte Bing for the East.
Africentric defensive back Trevon Saunders had two interceptions, including one for a 69-yard touchdown, and was named the East’s Defensive MVP.
“They all put their egos aside, and that was the best thing about the game,” said Geary Godfrey, an Independence assistant who headed the East all-stars.
Westland quarterback Jalen Brown passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another score while being named the West’s Offensive MVP.
Brookhaven wide receivers Clevis Towns and Lei’Tonn Backus had touchdown catches of 78 and 52 yards, respectively.
Central Crossing running back and defensive back Tory Clark was named the West’s Defensive MVP.
