Week 1 Recap
Westerville Central 29, DeSales 7
The host Westerville Central High School football team stung DeSales for three first-quarter touchdowns and let its defense do the rest en route to a 29-7 win in its opener Aug. 30.
In what was the first meeting between the programs, the Warhawks got three touchdown passes from quarterback Jared Drake and kept the Stallions’ new pistol offense in check.
“We made some huge plays,” Central senior wide receiver and defensive back Eldin Anu said. “We’re just thankful. This is the first game, and we’ve hopefully got 14 more to go.”
On third-and-18 from the DeSales 32 with 9 minutes, 6 seconds left in the first quarter, Drake eluded a sack and hit Nate Jackowski for a 32-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0.
After holding DeSales to a three-and-out on the next possession, Central’s Alex Fisher ran for a 46-yard touchdown with 8:00 left in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.
DeSales punted to end its next possession as well, and the Warhawks drove 61 yards on eight plays for their third score.
Drake connected with Anu for a 6-yard score with 4:27 to go in the opening quarter and then ran for the two-point conversion to make it 22-0.
With 2:47 left in the third quarter, Anu caught a short pass from Drake and broke for an 80-yard touchdown that made it 29-0.
DeSales scored its only touchdown on a 1-yard run by quarterback Brandon Krietemeyer with 8:20 remaining. That completed a 12-play, 80-yard drive.
“We got up early on them and our offense and defense did what they were supposed to do,” Central coach John Magistro said. “Defensively we did a nice job although we still had too many missed tackles.”
Drake finished 15-for-22 passing for 253 yards with three touchdowns. Fisher rushed for 58 yards and had two receptions for 57 yards. Anu had five catches for 107 yards.
Krietemeyer completed 11 of 28 passes for 146 yards and rushed for 39 yards and Andrew Sparks had four catches for 60 yards to lead DeSales.
“Obviously we got off to a really poor start, and they’re an athletic team,” DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins said. “The first seven minutes didn’t go so well but the last 17 minutes (of the first half) went OK. There are a lot of things we need to do better.”
