Senior place-kicker John McGue kicked three field goals to help the Dublin Coffman High School football team rally past visiting Dublin Jerome 16-14 on Aug. 30 in the season opener for both teams.
McGue’s 40-yard field goal with 3 minutes, 34 seconds provided the winning points.
“I try to block out everything and just concentrate on kicking the ball,” McGue said. “I hear the crowd, but I have to focus on the ball.”
Jerome quarterback Alex Cline hit running back Justin Stroup with a 40-yard pass with 30.2 seconds remaining. The Celtics’ Julian Manos attempted a 48-yard field goal, but Coffman defensive back Regan Malas tipped the ball as time expired.
With 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Stroup was stopped on a fourth-and-inches play on the Celtics’ own 12-yard line. Coffman had to settle for McGue’s 38-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 11 minutes, 4 seconds left in the game.
“I went for it because I believe in my kids,” Hundley said. “I thought we could make it and we were so close to making it.”
Jerome junior running back Steve Kidwell rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Both touchdowns and 109 yards came on nine second-quarter carries.
But Coffman’s defense held the Celtics scoreless in the second half and limited Kidwell to 22 yards in seven carries.
Senior running back Dre Kendrick ran 27 times for 130 yards to lead Coffman. Junior quarterback Ben Beckett was 6-for-14 passing for 54 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Kyle Marcinick in the first quarter.
