The Hilliard Davidson High School football held off visiting Grove City for a 28-19 win Aug. 30.
“I’m extremely pleased with this win,” Davidson coach Brian White said. “This is a really good win for us because we’re not real healthy right now.”
Davidson’s junior running back Markus Bailey rushed for two first-half touchdowns, helping the Wildcats build a 21-0 lead with 3 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Senior Brett Annis’ fumble recovery set up Bailey’s second touchdown, a 6-yard run.
Grove City cut the Davidson lead to 21-7 at halftime on quarterback Cameron Meece’s 76-yard touchdown run with 2:13 left in the second quarter and continued its comeback in the second half.
Meece added two touchdown runs (53, 1) in the second half to cut the deficit to 21-19 with 3:03 left in the game.
Davidson’s defense, however, preserved the win when it stopped Meece on a two-point conversion following his third touchdown of the game.
On the ensuing drive, Davidson’s D.D. Clark rounded out the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run with 1:59 remaining.
Clark finished with 110 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Meece led Grove City with 207 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
“This is a good football team,” Grove City coach Matt Jordan said. “We’re an experienced football team. The kids have a lot of heart. They played hard. They knew we dropped the ball in the first half and they responded in the second half like I knew they’d respond in the second half.”
