The Pickerington High School Central football team nearly rallied from a 24-point deficit but lost 38-33 on Aug. 30 at Centerville in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.
Quarterback Colby Simkins hit Eric Marshall for a 19-yard touchdown during the closing minutes, but the Elks recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
“Most kids would have (given up),” coach Jay Sharrett said. “We held them down at the goal line and stripped it one time down but they picked off a pass and ran it all the way down for a touchdown.”
Centerville’s Xavior Motley scored what proved to be the game-winning points on an 88-yard interception return that gave his team a 38-26 lead.
Simkins passed for about 300 yards, according to Sharrett, including a 54-yard touchdown to Rudy Stefanitis during the Tigers’ 26-point fourth quarter.
Isaiah Richmond returned a fumble recovery 37 yards for a touchdown to give Central a 7-0 lead. He later added a 1-yard scoring run to make it 31-14.
“It’s a really big school, and we knew they had us with the numbers,” Sharrett said. “We were just trying to go from situation to situation.”
