Steve Kidwell rushed for 173 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, to lead the Dublin Jerome High School football team to a 26-14 win over visiting Beechcroft on Sept. 6.
The Celtics established a powerful rushing attack in the first half and finished the game with 334 yards on 68 carries and kept the ball for nearly 39 minutes.
Justin Stroup rushed 15 times for 71 yards and added touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yards for the Celtics, who improved to 1-1. The Cougars fell to 1-1.
It was a victory that helped erase memories of the 16-14 loss to Dublin Coffman in week one.
"We had a big letdown in that game last week and that letdown takes time to get over," said coach Mark Hundley, whose team threw the ball just once. "In our practices we showed that and at times did so during the game tonight. But I think the fact that we came away with a victory is something that I hope propels us for the next couple weeks at least."
Beechcroft of the City League-North Division was held to 5 yards of offense in the first half, but the Cougars put up points in a hurry in the third quarter.
Adonis Davis, who carried the ball eight times for 83 yards, pulled away from Celtic defenders for a 72-yard touchdown run down the sideline with 4:51 left in the third.
Another big play put Beechcroft within a touchdown when Mike Powers connected with Landers Cox on a 67-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-14 with 25 seconds left in the third.
While Jerome had little trouble moving the ball, it had to settle for field goals of 27 and 36 yards from Julian Manos in the first half.
"We worked our butts off this week and tried to fight through the adversity," Kidwell said. "In the first half, we were punching the ball five or 10 yards (per play) and we took advantage of that. But we had to fight until the end of the game."
