Week 2 Recap

Hilliard Davidson 21, Hilliard Darby 0

A pair of senior running backs led the way for the Hilliard Davidson High School football team, as the Wildcats scored three times in the fourth quarter en route to a 21-0 victory over host Hilliard Darby on Sept. 6.

Davidon’s Phillipie Motley rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on six carries and D.D. Clark added 93 yards and a score on 12 carries as the Wildcats improved to 2-0 and took a 5-2 lead in the all-time series. Darby fell to 1-1.

“Darby controlled us and beat us at our own game for three quarters, but it’s amazing how powerful momentum can be, and once the momentum started going our way, they had a hard time stopping us,” Davidson coach Brian White said.

Both teams struggled to sustain drives in a scoreless first half, with Davidson being held to 99 yards while committing one turnover, and Darby gaining 67 yards and also turning the ball over once.

The Panthers opened the second half with a 17-play, 55-yard drive that consumed 9 minutes, 18 seconds, but ended on a turnover.

On fourth-and-3, Darby lined up to attempt a field goal, but was pushed out of field-goal range by a false-start penalty.

The Panthers then chose to go for the first down, but defensive back Markus Bailey stripped the ball out of Darby quarterback Nate Green’s throwing hand, and linebacker Ben Brooks recovered at Davidson’s 35-yard line.

Eight plays later, Clark scored on a 1-yard run to put Davidson ahead 7-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter.

“We made some mistakes that really hurt us,” said Darby coach John Santagata, whose squad turned the ball over four times. “Right when we got things going our way, we knocked ourselves back with penalties and mistakes.”

On the first play of Davidson’s next possession, Motley raced 76 yard down the left sideline for a touchdown.

Defensive back Parker Foard returned an interception 48 yards for a score with 2:37 remaining in the fourth quarter to close the scoring,

“(After the turnover) we finally started playing with passion and the game went our way,” Motley said. “On my touchdown, our offensive line sustained their blocks and the only contact was when one of their corners barely clipped my leg. All I had to do was out-run their guys to the end zone.”
