Bexley used its power running game to pile up 410 yards rushing last night to knock off visiting Centennial 34-22 in a nonconference game at Carlton Smith Field.
Andre Stewart ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. The junior quarterback was also 7 of 12 passing for 49 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. The Lions improved to 3-0 for the second time in three seasons.
“This was one of our goals coming in, to be in this position,” Bexley coach John Smith said. “I guess coming into the season, I don’t think I expected us to be where we’re at right now, physicality-wise. I couldn’t be prouder of where we are as an offensive line.”
Bexley’s line paved the way for Stewart, Zach Ward, who ran for 54 yards and two TDs on 17 carries, and Jacob Old, who had 109 rushing yards on nine attempts.
Centennial’s Darsean Watts had a 48-yard scoring run to give the Stars (2-1) a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Bexley answered when Stewart and Ward scored on short scoring runs within two minutes of the second quarter.
Jirequez Fair-Harris then scored from 1 yard for Centennial, but the extra-point attempt failed.
Stewart hit Nassir Cauthon on a 13-yard scoring pass to give Bexley a 21-13 halftime lead. Stewart and Ward each had second scoring runs in the third quarter.
