Week 3 Recap

Marysville 30, Dublin Scioto 28

Asked about the last time the Marysville High School football team started at 3-0, players and coaches pointed to 2008 when the Monarchs last reached the postseason.

Marysville remained among central Ohio's unbeaten by erasing a 14-point deficit in the first half and turning Dublin Scioto mistakes into scoring opportunities in putting away the visiting Irish 30-28 on Sept. 13.

Despite finishing with five turnovers and nine penalties for 90 yards, Scioto (2-1) had a shot to win until Kenny Kinder intercepted Nathan Densel at the Marysville 35-yard line with 1 minute, 29 seconds left.

"At halftime, we really got things into gear and put our heads together and got after it," Kinder said. "We don't really do anything special (on defense). We just hustle to the football, and we're a team with intensity."

Marysville took the lead for good when Matt Mulholland found his target in the corner of the end zone and Jimmy Applegate went high for the reception and remained in bounds with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.

The 28-yard score followed an 85-yard touchdown pass to Logan Roston with 9:15 to play in the third.

Mulholland finished 11 of 20 for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

"This was really about us changing our attitude," Marysville coach Morgan Cotter said. "Scioto is a well-coached team with great athletes. But it was about what we did in the first quarter, and we didn't play good Monarch football in the first quarter."

The Irish went up 21-7 when Densel scored from 6 yards. He struggled with his passing game in completing 19 of 32 passes for 163 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions.

Densel's 18-yard touchdown pass to Justin Schafer with 4:10 left in the third quarter gave Scioto a 28-24 lead.

"Give them credit for doing the things to win, but that was embarrassing," Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. "Penalties, turnovers and mental mistakes and you can't win that way. We still had a chance, but we were swimming upstream the whole time."
