Week 3 Recap
Worthington Kilbourne 28, Hamilton Township 23
The Worthington Kilbourne High School football team survived a multitude of mistakes on Sept. 13 to hold off visiting Hamilton Township 28-23.
Hamilton Township, which fell to 1-2, had its final drive with under two minutes remaining thwarted after reaching midfield from its own 23 in two plays.
On first down, however, the Wolves’ Alex Meehan sacked quarterback Dante White, and Mason Rigio sacked White on third down before Seth Hill broke up a fourth-down pass with 26 seconds left.
Meehan, an offensive tackle, was inserted at defensive end to provide a speed rush off the corner.
“I wanted to help my team in any way I could and I’m always ready when they call on me or rotate me in on defense,” Meehan said. “Our defense was tired, the line and the DBs. They threw the ball a ton.”
Meehan’s fellow offensive lineman, Joe Schick, fell on a Kilbourne fumble for a touchdown that gave the Wolves a 21-17 lead late in the third quarter. It was one of six fumbles by the Wolves, who lost three.
“We put the ball on the ground too often and didn’t sustain drives and that left our defense on the field way too long against an explosive offense,” Kilbourne coach Vince Trombetti said. “We’re 2-1 now, but we’re very fortunate and we’re going to have to make a lot of improvement from this point forward. We also had three interceptions, although two of those went through our receivers’ hands. We can’t have that.”
Seth Hill scored on an 11-yard run to make it 28-17 with 7:18 remaining, but the Rangers got a 10-yard scoring toss from White to Louisville-bound tight end Micky Crum to make it 28-23 with 5:40 left.
White threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns on 21-for-48 passing. He was intercepted twice. Crum had seven receptions for 90 yards and Aaron Williams had six for 121 yards.
Justin Stoner ran for 152 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries to pace Kilbourne.
