The Hilliard Bradley High School football team finally put everything together and picked up its first victory, defeating host Olentangy Orange 44-0 on Sept. 13.
The Jaguars (1-2) led 24-0 at halftime and limited the Pioneers to three first downs in the first half. Orange (0-3) finished with nine first downs.
“It was nice to come out and play like this,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “In the first game (a 21-7 loss to Marysville on Aug. 30), we had offensive problems and last week we had defensive problems (a 33-21 loss to Reynoldsburg on Sept. 5). We were able to come out and put things together on both sides of the ball.”
Bradley senior wide receiver Matt Johnson went 50 yards on a reverse and senior kicker Jeff Ireland made the first of four extra points for a quick lead with 8 minutes, 54 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Defensive back Ryan Reffitt had a fumble recovery for the Jaguars at the Bradley 49-yard line, setting up the first of two second-quarter touchdowns by senior running back T.J. Martin. Ireland kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
“(The Jaguars) were running an I-formation set during scrimmages, but they switched back to an option set similar to what they have had in the past,” Orange coach Brian Cross said. “They did what they needed to do, and we couldn’t stop them or move the ball.”
Bradley had 421 total yards, with 384 coming on the ground. The Pioneers rushed for 36 of their 146 total yards.
Junior slotback Trey Anderson ran for 104 yards and one touchdown in two carries for the Jaguars and Martin added 86 yards and two scores in 18 carries. Senior quarterback Tommy Horn ran for 75 yards in 12 carries and completed five of 11 passes for 37 yards.
Senior defensive back Daniel Tepe returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 37-0 in the third quarter.
Senior running back Jacob Bobrowski led Orange with 51 rushing yards on five carries. Junior quarterback C.J. Stablein was 7-for-19 passing for 60 yards and freshman Will Phillis was 6-for-15 for 50 yards. Senior wide receiver Christian King had four receptions for 32 yards.
Senior linebacker Zack Popovec also had an interception for Bradley, and senior defensive back Alec McCurry had one for Orange.
