Week 4 Recap

Ready 49, Whitehall 19

A power running game led by seniors Akili Taylor and Bran-den Bailey helped the Ready High School football team beat host Whitehall 49-19 on Sept. 19.

Taylor rushed for 274 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries, Bailey had 60 yards and two touchdowns, Nickolas Chapman added a pair of short touchdown runs and quarterback Matt Yoho passed for one touchdown and rushed for another to help the Silver Knights improve to 4-0.

After falling behind 28-0, Whitehall scored a pair of touchdowns during the middle quarters, but couldn’t get closer than 22 points. The Rams fell to 2-2.

“Our offensive line gets all the credit,” Yoho said. “Akili and Bran-den opened things up. Our depth helped.”

Ready took command early. With 10:19 left in the opening quarter, Taylor ran for a 38-yard touchdown. After the Silver Knights forced Whitehall to a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, Ready drove 59 yards for a score culminating in a 10-yard touchdown run by Yoho to make it 14-0.

Whitehall moved to Ready’s 28-yard-line on its next possession, but the Rams’ drive stalled after failing to convert a fourth-and-27 form the Silver Knights’ 28. Six of Whitehall’s 12 plays during the drive were for negative yardage.

On the second play of the ensuing drive, Yoho hit Alex Eblin for a 5-yard reception and Whitehall was whistled for a personal foul to move the ball to the Rams’ 27.

On an untimed down on the next play, Yoho found Bailey for a touchdown to make it 21-0.

Ready made it 28-0 on a 2-yard run by Chapman with 4:14 left in the second quarter. Whitehall quarterback Cody Koons ran for a 1-yard score with 17.4 seconds remaining before halftime, but Bailey added a 16-yard scoring run with 8:35 to go in the third quarter.

“We’re really pleased,” Ready coach Joel Cutler said. “(Whitehall) is a talented team.”

Koons, who threw for a 61-yard touchdown to Demetrius Ridgeway with 6:48 left in the third period, finished 7-for-14 passing for 164 yards and added 18 rushes for 61 yards. Ridgeway had four catches for 132 yards.

“We had some mental mistakes, and penalties killed us,” coach Jake Kuhner said. “Ready is a tough team.”
