The Reynoldsburg High School football team scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally for a 21-10 victory over visiting Grove City in the OCC-Ohio Division opener Sept. 20.
The Raiders, who held the Dawgs scoreless in the second half, improved to 3-1 overall while Grove City dropped to 1-3.
Reynoldsburg trailed 10-7 late in the third quarter when it took over on its own 4-yard line following a misplayed punt, but the Raiders marched down the field with a 14-play, 96-yard drive that took 6 minutes, 25 seconds.
The key play was a 37-yard run by David Moore to the 1-yard line, and senior Jordan Aekins scored on quarterback sneak from there for a 14-10 lead with 9:52 remaining in the fourth quarter.
“We knew we had to get out of that hole first,” Reynoldsburg coach Buddy White said. “When it counted, we got the job done.”
The Raiders sealed the victory when defensive back Ashton Dulin intercepted a pass by Grove City quarterback Cameron Meece at the 50-yard line and returned it for a touchdown with just under two minutes remaining.
“It was the little things for us,” Grove City coach Matt Jordan said. “All of those tiny things add up and cost you.”
Moore finished with 170 yards on 25 carries and Zach Mehan carried 10 times for 51 yards to lead the Raiders, and Aekins was 5-for-9 passing for 56 yards.
For Grove City, Meece was 10-for-24 passing for 95 yards with one interception and added 47 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Corey Williams ran for 53 yards on six attempts with one touchdown.
Reynoldsburg held a 301-244 edge in total yards, including a 153-71 advantage in the second half.
“The kids believe,” White said. “They’re young, but they aren’t intimidated.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Grove City got on the board first when Williams ran almost untouched to the left side for a 46-yard touchdown with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter.
Reynoldsburg tied the game with a seven-play, 70-yard drive. Following two penalties and a sack of Aekins, the Raiders faced fourth-and-goal at the Grove City 10-yard line when Moore powered through to the right sideline and dove for the pylon to score with 4:41 remaining in the half.
The Grove City defense stopped Reynoldsburg on downs twice in the first half and sacked Aekins three times.
Grove City added a 22-yard field goal by Drew Capehart with four seconds remaining in the first half to lead 10-7 at the break.
