Week 4 Recap
Westerville Central 41, Dublin Scioto 38
A lightning delay that lasted more than one hour seemed to be enough to recharge the Westerville Central High School football team.
The Warhawks rallied from 13 points down in the third quarter to win their OCC-Cardinal Division opener 41-38 at Dublin Scioto on Sept. 20.
Central's Eldin Anu returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and then intercepted a pass that helped his team take the lead for good when Benny Snell scored on a 1-yard run with 1:38 left in the third quarter to put the Warhawks up 31-30.
"We've been talking the last three weeks that we need some big plays," said Central coach John Magistro, whose team improved to 3-1 overall. "(Anu) is a big-play kind of guy, so you need guys to make those kind of plays and he came through for us."
For fans who did wait out the storm that crippled the press box sound system, they were rewarded with drama.
After Scioto's Justin Shafer caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Densel with 3:48 left to make it 41-38, the Irish appeared to recover an onside kick at the Central 44 but the officials didn't let the play stand.
"The (official) near us said that I screwed up and there was an inadvertent whistle and blew it dead," said Scioto coach Karl Johnson, whose team dropped to 2-2. "It is what it is."
The Irish were prepared to get the ball back with 1:18 left, but Francis Cutchen couldn't hang onto the punt.
Central quarterback Jared Drake completed 9 of 19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown and rushed 18 times for 118 yards and two scores, including a 56-yard run that gave the Warhawks a 41-30 lead with 4:50 to play.
