Week 5 Recap

Dublin Coffman 31, Marysville 28

The Dublin Coffman High School football team used four interceptions to help break a three-game losing streak with a 31-28 home victory over previously unbeaten Marysville on Sept. 27.

Senior linebacker Dalton Maynard returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown with 1 minute, 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Shamrocks a 31-21 lead in the OCC-Central Division game.

Marysville quarterback Matt Mullholland connected with Patrick Young on a 14-yard score with 25.6 seconds remaining to end a furious fourth-quarter in which both teams scored 14 points.

“We played great defense at key moments of the game,” said Coffman coach Mark Crabtree, whose team improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the OCC-Central. “And Dalton’s interception return was really big for us.”

Maynard also caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Gunnar Hoak in the second quarter and he recovered a blocked punt in the first quarter to set up the first Coffman score. He caught four passes for 46 yards.

Junior quarterback Ben Beckett threw two touchdowns for the Shamrocks, both coming on fourth-down plays. The first was a 19-yarder to junior wide receiver Chase Granlund in the first quarter and the other was for 36 yards to senior wide receiver Koi Turner with 1:57 left to play to give for a 24-21 Coffman lead.

Senior defensive back Clay Raterman had two interceptions for Coffman and junior defensive back Shaun Rankin also picked off a pass.

“We have to execute in the red zone,” said Marysville coach Morgan Cotter, whose team dropped to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the OCC-Central. “There were a couple times we should have scored and didn’t, but you have to give (Coffman) credit for stopping us.”

Mullholland was 34 of 66 passing for 353 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had a 26-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Logan Roston and a 2-yarder to senior wide receiver Noah Arbohgast. The Monarchs also scored on a 1-yard run by junior running back Aron Mowery.

Senior wide receiver Jimmy Applegate caught 13 passes for 167 yards for Marysville and senior wide receiver Nick Mazza added eight catches for 59 yards. Roston caught six passes for 51 yards.

Beckett was 12 of 21 passing for 161 yards and Hoak was 3-for-6 through the air for 80 yards. Junior wide receiver C.J. Saunders had four receptions for 65 yards, and junior wide receiver Kyle Marcinick had three catches for 61 yards. Junior running back Dre Kendrick ran for 62 yards on 16 carries.
