On a night when yards were hard to come by, the Olentangy Liberty High School football team needed to come up with one more stop.
Under pressure, Upper Arlington quarterback Kyle Kaparos shoveled a pass to Chris Frey on fourth-and-8 from the Liberty 10. It fell incomplete with 1 minute, 30 seconds left.
The defensive stand preserved a 16-8 victory Sept. 27 for the visiting Patriots, who improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the OCC-Central Division.
"We fought and I told our kids anytime you win a game in this league you celebrate and you enjoy it because there’s some darn good football in our division," Liberty coach Steve Hale said. "We’re just very proud of them. The stand there at the end was just amazing."
The Patriots’ defense made every yard count.
UA entered the game averaging 223.5 yards rushing and was held to 81 yards on 38 attempts. Frey, a Michigan State recruit, finished with 66 yards on 23 carries. He scored on a 12-yard run with 7:10 left to help pull the Golden Bears within eight points.
“We just couldn’t get the run game going consistently at all and I thought that was the difference in the game,” said UA coach Mike Golden, whose team dropped to 2-3 and 1-1. “It just got away from us and we didn't make it happen.”
Despite two interceptions, Liberty quarterback Matt Kessler completed 15 of 22 passes for 184 yards and kept drives going with big plays. His 32-yard pass to Dan Rhinehart with 11 seconds left in the second quarter allowed Spencer Mosteller to kick a 23-yard field goal to put the Patriots up 9-0 at halftime.
Daryian Davies scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards for Liberty.
