Pickerington North's Zeph Miller turns the corner and races toward the end zone Friday, Oct. 4.

Beginning with its first play from scrimmage Oct. 4, the host Pickerington High School North football team did its part to turn its matchup against sister-school Pickerington Central into a rout.

The Panthers scored four touchdowns in the first 6 minutes, 54 seconds of the game and cruised past the Tigers 49-14.

North quarterback Zeph Miller threw two touchdowns and rushed for three more as the Panthers improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the OCC-Ohio Division.

Central fell to 3-2 and 2-1.

“We had to beat them fast,” Miller said. “We played hard on each and every possession.”

In what was a sign of things to come, Miller found Justin Childers over the middle on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and Childers broke down the right sideline for a 63-yard touchdown.

After the Panthers forced a three-and-out on Central’s first possession, North made it 14-0 on a 43-yard touchdown run by Miller three plays into the next drive.

The Panthers took a 21-0 lead when Jabree Lather ran for a 10-yard touchdown with 6:56 left in the first quarter. The score came two plays after a 49-yard pass from Miller to Jordan Chambers.

North continued its aerial assault when Miller and Childers hooked up for a 57-yard touchdown pass with 5:06 to go in the opening period to make it 28-0.

In the second quarter, Miller added touchdown runs of 8 and 4 yards and Lather scored on a 13-yard run. Central’s only first-half score came on a 21-yard run by Isaiah Richmond.

“We came out with a (multiple wide receiver-formation) that we haven’t done since (last season),” North coach Tom Phillips said.

During the first half, Miller was 9-for-10 passing for 240 yards. He finished with 255 yards passing and 87 yards rushing.

Lather rushed 12 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

For Central, quarterback Colby Simkins was 14-for-27 passing for 191 yards and one touchdown, and Isaiah Richmond rushed 13 times for 75 yards and one score.

“We knew there were some matchup problems,” Central coach Jay Sharrett said. “Those first four possessions they had got us out of our game plan.”
