Week 7 Recap

Newark Catholic 42, Johnstown-Monroe 21

Senior quarterback Chayce Crouch rushed for four touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Newark Catholic High School football team past host Johnstown-Monroe 42-21 on Oct. 11 in an LCL-Small School Division game.

Newark Catholic (6-1, 2-0) took advantage of three Johnstown turnovers in the fourth quarter, as the Green Wave scored 21 points in the final 12 minutes.

“We talked about being calm and being in the moment and our kids played calmer in critical situations, especially in the second half,” Newark Catholic coach Bill Franks said. “That’s a credit to Chayce and our seniors. They knew it was going to be a four-quarter game and they were able to make adjustments and execute.”

The teams were tied at 14 at halftime and 21 after three quarters. Crouch, who has verbally committed to the University of Illinois, scored the first of his three fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns on a 21-yard run with 10 minutes, 57 seconds to play.

Johnstown senior Alex Workman returned the kickoff to the Johnnies’ 38, but Newark Catholic’s Nick Cavinee recovered a fumble on the next play at the 35. Eight plays later, Crouch scored on a fourth-down play from the 1 for a 35-21 edge with 6:20 to play.

“(Newark Catholic) has a good football team and you have to give them credit,” said Johnstown coach Mike Carter, whose team dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the LCL-Small School. “(Crouch) is a very good ballplayer and he did what good players do. They make big plays.”

Crouch rushed for 51 yards on 17 carries and was 10 of 18 passing for 204 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown to running back Anthony Wing in the third quarter. Wing rushed for 62 yards on 14 carries with a 4-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Johnstown rushed for 179 yards on 42 carries led by junior running back Cody Farley with 103 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Senior quarterback Josh Kirkpatrick was 9-for-17 passing for 131 yards for the Johnnies, with two interceptions and a 41-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Nathanael Ashbrook.

Zack Fleming had an interception for the Johnnies. Wing and defensive back Joe Davis had interceptions for the Green Wave.
