The Hilliard Darby High School football team scored on its first seven possessions en route to routing visiting Westerville South 52-17 in an OCC-Cardinal Division game on Oct. 11.
The Panthers improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the OCC-Cardinal, as quarterback Nate Green rushed for 67 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, fullback Lorenzo McLaurin ran for 88 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and running back Anton Trapasso added 83 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.
“We executed at a high level both offensively and defensively and this was an unexpected outcome,” Darby coach John Santagata said. “I thought our offensive line did a nice job of recognizing various fronts and getting a push at the line of scrimmage, and our defense played really well overall.”
The Panthers totaled 118 yards of offense in the first quarter while limiting South to 29 yards while taking a 13-0 lead, as Green scored on runs of 4 and 3 yards.
Darby also put together a 12-play. 65-yard touchdown drive, which was capped by a 5-yard run by McLaurin with 3 minutes, 53 seconds remaining in the second quarter and led 23-3 at halftime.
The Wildcats — who dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the OCC-Cardinal — drove inside Darby’s territory three times in the first half, but were stopped inches short on a fake punt attempt in the first quarter and had a pass intercepted by defensive back Zack Donatelli at Darby’s 4-yard line in the waning moments of the second quarter.
“The score could have been 21-14 at halftime but we made some mistakes and the score just snowballed,” South coach Rocky Pentello said. “This is probably the best team we’ve played this year. They’re big up front and they pushed us around.”
Quarterback Timmy Bates was 13-for-24 passing for 135 yards, and running back Darien Miller ran for 36 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries for South.
