Gahanna's Grimme wins Super 12 captain fan vote
Once again, ThisWeekSPORTS.com asked for feedback from central Ohio high school soccer fans. This year, 21,357 votes were cast on what player they think should be the Super 12 boys soccer team captain.
Fan voting ended at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. The team will be released in the Nov. 14 editions of ThisWeek Community Newspapers and online at ThisWeekSPORTS.com.
Gahanna's Christian Grimme won the fan vote with 35.01 percent followed by Olentangy Liberty's Donny Deep at 33.69 percent, Dublin Coffman's Ben Kinney at 23.46 percent and Worthington Christian's Sam Condon at 7.84 percent.
The winner of the fan poll vote will count as one vote. Each member of the 12-person full-time sports staff at ThisWeek Newspapers will cast a vote one of the three finalists below, bringing the total number of ballots cast on the Super 12 captain to 13. The player with the most votes will be named captain.
Here are the 2013 finalists:
•Sam Condon, Worthington Christian: The Warriors have won nine consecutive Division III district titles, and the latest offensive star to come through the program is this senior forward. Condon, who was the district's Player of the Year, has 21 goals and 15 assists.
•Donny Deep, Olentangy Liberty: A first-team all-district and first-team all-OCC-Central Division honoree, Deep has nine goals, three assists and five game-winning goals this season. The Patriots have won three consecutive Division I district championships.
•Ben Kinney, Dublin Coffman: The Division I district and OCC-Central Player of the Year, Kinney has 12 goals and 12 assists for a Coffman team that beat Westerville Central 5-0 to win a district title Oct. 26. The junior forward has been a contributor for the Shamrocks since his freshman year.
•Christian Grimme, Gahanna: The OCC-Ohio Division Player of the Year, Grimme is a senior goalkeeper who led the Lions to a No. 9 ranking in the final Division I state poll and a district semifinal finish.
