The Hilliard Davidson High School football team tuned up for the Division I, Region 2 playoffs by defeating visiting Marysville 42-7 on Nov. 1 behind running back D.D. Clark’s 300 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 20 carries.
The Wildcats finished the regular season 10-0 and clinched their fourth consecutive OCC-Central Division title at 7-0.
The Wildcats have finished the regular season undefeated in three of the last four years.
“It is special for us,” Davidson coach Brian White said of the undefeated regular season. “Our kids literally leave their mark on the wall. They’re allowed to sign the wall (in the locker room) if they’re on an undefeated team or state championship team, and that was certainly a goal to be on an undefeated team.
“Obviously, we’d like to take it a little bit further. Obviously, because we want to win, but also because it’s such a great group of kids, I don’t want to stop spending my Friday nights with them.”
Davidson will be making its sixth consecutive postseason appearance. The Wildcats won state titles in 2006 and 2009.
Davidson has clinched a first-round home game when the postseason begins Saturday, Nov. 9.
Meanwhile, Marysville finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the OCC-Central, but it also will be playing next weekend. The Monarchs entered the game against Davidson having secured a postseason berth in Division I, Region 1 — their first since 2008.
The Monarchs are expected to play their first-round playoff game Saturday, Nov. 9, on the road.
“We got manhandled by a good football team and they did some things against us in the first half that our kids didn’t respond well to,” Marysville coach Morgan Cotter said. “They do what they do and they do it very well. We knew that wasn’t a secret of any sort.”
