It's been at least 10 years since the Beechcroft High School football team finished a season with four losses, but coach Bruce Ward didn't want to think about that.
The two-time defending City League-North champions took advantage of turnovers and held Northland to one first down in the first half in a 17-14 victory Nov. 1.
Beechcroft scored last in a see-saw battle when Mike Powers connected with Darius Ford for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 3 minutes, 36 seconds left.
Despite the loss, the Vikings were projected to be the eighth and final playoff qualifier in Division II, Region 5.
"We knew we weren't going to the playoffs for the first time in a long time, so we just wanted to put it together one last time for our seniors and for our pride," said Ward, whose team finished 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the league. "It's been a hectic year for us."
The winning drive went 83 yards in 15 plays and included a fake punt on fourth-and-10 from the Beechcroft 45 when Powers hit Ford for 23 yards. A facemask penalty on the play added 15 yards.
Northland (7-2, 5-2) managed to reach the Beechcroft 10 on its final drive, but time ran out on a completed pass.
The Vikings held a 14-10 lead after three quarters when Nateshawn Hargrove scored on a 6-yard run with 1:38 remaining in the third. Jhustus Cornley returned a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown to cut Beechcroft's lead to 10-7 at halftime.
Twice Northland had the ball inside the Beechcroft 20 and lost the ball.
"We started off slow and we just weren't clicking, and when we did start clicking and we got in the red zone, we would turn the ball over," Northland coach Kevin Tooson said. "That was the story of the night. We had a chance to take control of the game and turned the ball over."
Powers was 6-for-9 passing for 75 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 50 yards on 16 carries. Running back Khalor Franklin finished with 120 yards on 22 carries.
